mate, this is a subject that we all have no real idea about. I lost my job two weeks ago and am finding it hard to find a new one,.

I am going to college in September to do a higher access course so that I can go to uni next year (hopefully to train to become a paramedic or a nurse) but even if it does go well who's to know that's what I really want.

At the end of the day there is no knowing what will happen but we might as well enjoy getting there. All the interesting people in my life still don't know what they want to do, but who really does?

i've spent many hours thinking of this and i want to do somethin with music, i love cars etc but music is my game but i dont wanna go to college, i know its sounds stupid but i hate anythin to do with writing and learning, im the type of guy that just wants to do somethin and learn that way, and the type of thing i want to do in music i wouldent even be able to study at college anyway.

i dont see the point in doing somethin that i know im gonna lose intrest in it just seems pointless to me, its like i could of gone to college when i left school and done a pluming course and being big bucks now but i dont like pluming.

trust me dude there is so many of us out there that have no idea what we wanna do, so we end up doing a shit job or the other route which seems to be popular is goin in the army.

think of stuff you like to do and try and narrow it down to one specific subject you like and try and chase it.

dont worry about your future tho just chase the dream for now haha

i was exactly the same, no idea what i wanted to do with my life!
after school, i did i year of 6th form - just felt theres no point in it, its not directed in anywhere particular, what was the point in doing another year then 2-3 years of uni

always had an interested, as we all do, in engineering. so i went to college and did my PEO (Performing Engineering Operations) (1year course) and BTEC Technical Engineering course (2 year course)

still had no idea exactly what side of engineering i'd want to get into though, and thought about just getting a part time job for the time being
most of the guys there had jobs and apprenticeships, and a guy at the college who deals with apprenticeships took us for a class, and started talking to him

i emailed him the next day to see if he had any engineering apprenticeships and he emailed me back saying he'd just got one through, for Alstom, who built/maintain/upgrade the virgin pendolino trains
i thought what do i know about trains LOL
so i said no thanks mate, email me if you get anything else. he replied and said he reckoned i should go for it, sounds like a good one.
thought about it and decided what hell, go for the interview, bit of experience

so few days later went for the interview, went well - but still was unsure of exactly what the job was goign to be about

couple of weeks later they called me and said....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0tAeFfGwJ0&feature=player_embedded

went down to the depot for an induction and to sort out the contract, and get to see what exactly i'd be doing.

told me it would be a 4 year apprenticeship, and i'll do ONC electrical electronics (2 years) then HNC electrical electronics (2 years) & a Level 3 NVQ in Electronics
i'd be doing permanent days, with day release for college.

after the 4 years, i'd join 1 of 6 maintenance teams as Team Member-A

team member A's at this depot do maintenance, repairs, upgrades etc
carry out exams, which are like big MOT's
mechanical maintenance and repairs - traction motors,HVAC's, Auxillary Converters, bogie tilt actuators etc...
Electronic upgrades etc...
carry out arrival and depature exams
can become depot drivers, so can move sets about the depot (extra 5 grand a year for sitting on your ass! )

we've also got a paint booth that we use for our own sets and take on work from other fleets

the 4 years end in august this year, started as a team member-a already though, just waiting to be safety critical assessed.

TBF i wouldnt want to work anywheere else, not that ive got much to compare it to, but its turned out to be a good apprenticeship.
on the whole its a good company to work for, and theres alot of scope within the company to progress higher
been sent to tons of courses at our other depots, glasgow, manchester etc...all expenses paid, just a laugh with the other apprentices
worked down at statford - long marstons, next door to shakespear raceway, working on set 33 that Crashed at Grayrigg.
worked on the H2 overhaul at manchester, whole fleet of 52 sets stripped and refurbed - after a certain milleage they have to be refurbed

been involved with alot of Kaizen and 5's events etc...
so you get to do alot of stuff outside the normal work

college work is a ball ache though, 5 years all together

only downside is now im a team member A, i have to work shifts Rolling Eyes
but you do get an extra 18.5% shift allowance

it just goes to show, if you dont know what the hell you want to do, just apply for jobs, see how they go

if i wasnt doing this i dont know what the hell i'd be doing!!

look for an apprenticeship, you get less pay for 4 years but then i gues its worth it in the long run, and if you dont mind doing college work.

you never know what they are like untill you try it, and see for yourself
if its not for you, move on to the next.

every couple of years they look for apprentices at our place, and theres a few people coming up for retirement in 2 years, so i'll keep anyone thats interests posted on that so you can apply

yeah i know what you mean, you should like your job.
if i had an apprenticeship at a garage as mechanic though i KNOW id get to hate it, something that i like doing in my own time, im now doing 5 days a week.
i wouldnt want to look at another engine when i get home. it would ruin it for me
so maybe not a good idea to do something you love to do as a hobby, as a daily grind. something related to it maybe

Well I thought about college, started a Electronics course and hated it tbh so I left. Worst decision ever though I wish I stopped the year then changed course.

But atm im working on a farm when there's work and I love it, but the wage isn't exactly good for the work I put in. Although I don't mind because I really enjoy it.

But when I get older and have commitments I'm going to be fucked.

I looked at college again the other day and now I'm 19 I think I've got to pay but i don't want to pay for a course that's going to be a waste of time because I dont want to persue it as a career.

All these fucking decisions

i took it at a-level and dropped it lol
2bf its solid, and if my job didnt depend on me doing it i NEVER would of done it. i have 1 year left on my HNC now and i'm gonna party like its 1999 when its over.

definately worth looking into an apprenticeship, they will be training you, and putting you on course so you dont need a huge amount of qualifications to start off with really.
my job is mechanically and electrically based. had mechanical background, but NO electronic background. but ofcourse they were putting me on courses

and ofcourse, you get paid while your studying which is a bonus

just apply to some, worth a shot. keep you posted if i hear of any

Think i'll stick the second year out, just cause a-s levels are a waste of time imo. At least i'm getting qualifications, not sure how good they'll be though lol
